He was my instructor and a friend. You just needed to mention to him once that you are interested in information security and he would give you a ton of material to study, and would recommend attending different security conferences and workshops like Bsides and Capture the Flag events. The things I learnt from his classes and from the events he recommended, I use that knowledge almost every day at work. I remember the first time I took one of his classes, I had to get a wavier for a prerequisite class before I could take his class. I asked him on the very first day if I should drop his class for now and take it later since I hadn’t taken the prerequisite yet. He started asking me questions about IP subnets and different port numbers, and then he said, that I will do fine and don’t have to drop his class. I have good memories of him, his classes, and how energetic he was all the time. May he rest in peace, and May his family find strength and comfort.
You will be always missed Mr. Bates.
