Robert "Bob" Maynard Berglund's Obituary
Robert Maynard Berglund, 80, died of cancer on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, in Milford, Delaware. He was born on January 21, 1943, to Mary Maynard Berglund and Martin Bernard “Scud” Berglund at Kent General Hospital in Dover.
He is survived by his sister Kirsten Bradley and brother-in-law David Bradley of Richmond, Virginia; niece Alexandra Keller (Brad) of Falls Church, Virginia; and nephew Carrington Bradley (Kathy) of San Jose, California. He is also survived by four grandnieces, Avery and Sinclaire Bradley and Clare and Lucy Keller as well as lifelong friends Joe McDaniel, Harry Terry, and Charles Darrell with whom he lunched weekly for almost 50 years.
He graduated from Dover High School in 1961. He attended the University of Virginia and in 1965 received a B.S. degree in Commerce. While at the University, he was in Air Force ROTC and later commissioned into the United States Air Force upon graduation. He served on active duty from October 1965 until April 1969 that included postings to Homestead Air Force Base, Florida, and the US base in Istanbul, Turkey. He served in the reserves until 1971 and was discharged with the rank of Captain.
After returning to Dover, he joined the fiscal management staff of the Delaware Department of Health. He soon became a familiar face at Dover Hardware, a business founded by his parents in 1952. In 1976, he became the sole owner of the store.
During his business career and throughout retirement he was involved in organizations and activities to benefit the City of Dover and the counties of Kent and Sussex. He was a board member and President of the Dover Rotary Club, member of the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce, President of the Downtown Dover Partnership, member of the Board of The Hope Medical-Dental Clinic, and Treasurer of the Delaware Prostate Cancer Coalition.
Of particular interest to him were two local organizations having multi-state and national importance. Those included BayHealth, Inc. where he was a member of the Board of Directors from 1997 to 2008 and served as Vice Chairman & Secretary. At the time of his death, he remained Chairman of the Planning Committee. In addition, he became a life member of the Air Mobility Command Museum Foundation at Dover AFB in 1992 and served as a Member of the Board of Directors from 2005 to 2023. He also took great pride serving as the Air Force Association State President.
He was a member of Avenue Methodist Church, Milford, served as chairperson of the Finance Committee from 2014 to 2021, as well as a member of the Administrative Council.
A family interment service, officiated by The Most Reverend Dr. Thomas W. Mercer, was held on September 15, 2023, at Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.
A Celebration of Life will be held November 18, 2023, at Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church Street, Milford, DE at 2 PM.
