Lionel Joseph Irvine
Dover-Lionel Joseph Irvine, 82 years, 6 months and one day, of Dover, died on July 14, 2017, at his residence in Dover, (Kent) DE. He was born on January 13, 1935, in Leominster, Massachusetts. Lionel graduated Cum Laude in Latin from Leominster High School and soon attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, MA. He graduated WPI, with a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil Engineering.
He married Joanne Alice Preston at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Leominster, MA.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph W. and Flora (Schuster) Irvine of Leominster, and his sister Jo-An (Irvine) Mau of Leominster.
Lionel, served his country by serving in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Benning, GA from 1958-1960, and later at Fort Ord, CA from 1961-1962.
He worked for the State of California, Department of Public Works, Division of Highways (Department of Transportation-CALTRANS), as a Civil Engineer. He held a Professional Engineer License (Registered Civil Engineer) in both California and Delaware.
Lionel enjoyed flying, traveling across country and visiting other countries, collecting toy trains (Lionel Trains - O gauge), drinking Moxie and researching Genealogy. While living in California, Lionel obtained his Pilot's License.
Lionel was a member of Oneonta Congregational Church in South Pasadena, California. He moved to Dover after he retired.
He is survived by his wife Joanne Irvine; a daughter Dr. Deborah L. (Irvine) and her husband Lindell V. Riddle of Mayfield Heights, Ohio; a son Douglas and his wife Rachel (Maldonado) Irvine of Rosemead, CA; and a son Andrew and his wife Laura (Threlfall) Irvine of Virginia Beach, VA. He is survived by 4 grandchildren: Ann Riddle, Mary Irvine, William Irvine and Matthew Irvine. Lionel is also survived by a nephew, Henry Mau and his wife Sabine, and their 2 children (Francesca and William).
There will be a celebration of Lionel's life, held at Trader Funeral Home, in Dover, on October 9th, 2017, at 10:00AM. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Leominster, MA, at a later date.
