Katherine Celeste Slavin's Obituary
Katherine C. (Kit) Slavin, 88, of Dover, DE, died peacefully Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE.
Daughter of the late Alois C. and Veronica Schlott, Kit was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Joseph F. Slavin, and her sisters, Marie Decker and Sandra O’Donnell. Kit is survived by her four sons: Kevin J. and his wife, Wendy, of Hackettstown, NJ; Timothy A., of Dover; Alois C. and his wife, Catherine, of Clarks Summit, PA; and Peter F., whom she resided with in Dover. Additional immediate survivors include her sister, Paula Hammond, of Littleton, CO.; her cousin, Lynn McCaffrey, of East Chester, NY; and a niece, Karen (Decker) Pelkey, of Corvallis, MT, all of whom she kept very close in her later years.
She adored her 11 grandchildren, which include Josh Deuel, Kate Burns, Sarah Guzman, Sean Slavin, Alaine Slavin, Maj. Esa Slavin (USAF), Jehan Slavin, Jack Knox, Evan Knox, Rose Slavin and Roy Slavin. Additionally, she also cherished her 14 great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include many nieces, nephews and friends.
Kit was born and raised in Hunterdon County, NJ, grew up on a farm outside of Frenchtown, and later graduated from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. She earned a nursing degree at Mercer County Community College while raising her family in Mercerville and later Ewing Township. She worked at Mercer Street Friends Center in Trenton, NJ, where she helped to deliver in-home medical care to Trenton’s under-served population.
In 1985, Kit and Joe started vacationing in Port Orange, FL, and later retired there. Her hobbies included playing bridge, golf, bird watching and going to her favorite beach, Ponce Inlet. She will be fondly remembered by family and friends for being the centerpiece in her sprawling family’s life. Kit also cherished the many trips and vacations that she enjoyed with family and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Pete and Evan for watching over Grandma Kit, and acknowledge Delaware Hospice for the care extended to her during this final part of her life.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 3816 E. State St, Mercerville, NJ. Visitation with the family will precede the mass at 10 a.m.
