John Irving Mitchell “Jack”, 84, of Dover, Delaware, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Feb 16, https://2026.Born on October 27, 1941, in Little Creek, Delaware, Jack was the son of the late David Replogle Mitchell and Doris Blanner Mitchell. He graduated from Dover High School in 1959 and began working in the grocery business at just 13 years old at the A & P Super Market. In 1958, he joined Acme Markets, where he dedicated 31 years of service, working his way up from bag boy to clerk, assistant manager, and eventually store manager. After leaving Acme, Jack continued his commitment to public service as an Inspector for the City of Dover until his retirement in https://2001.Jack devoted much of his life to serving his community. He joined the Cheswold Fire Company in 1957 and served until 1962 before moving to Dover and becoming a lifelong member of Robbins Hose Company, where he served faithfully for more than 60 years. He also proudly served his country in the Delaware National Guard from 1963 to https://1969.In 1973, Jack fulfilled a lifelong dream by earning his private pilot’s license — a milestone that reflected his determination and love of https://adventure.Beyond his professional and community service, Jack was a devoted husband and family man. He shared a deep and lasting love with his wife, Ruth Ann Singleton Mitchell, and cherished the life they built together. He had a passion for woodworking and took pride in working with his hands, creating pieces that remain lasting reminders of his craftsmanship. A dedicated student of history, Jack was an avid reader and history buff who enjoyed learning and sharing stories of the https://past.Jack will be remembered as a steady, gentle presence — a man of quiet strength, deep loyalty, and unwavering dedication to his family, friends and https://community.Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth Ann Singleton Mitchell, and his https://parents.He is survived by his daughters, Libby McConville (David) of Gay, Georgia, and Jo Ann (Misha) of Atlanta, Georgia; his granddaughters, Molly Moye (Damaize) Hyattsville, MD, Marlena Henning (Colin) Denver, CO and Mariel McConville (Tate) Galveston, TX. His grandsons, Heath and Hunter Helms; his great-grandchildren, Marshall, Maeve, and Mercy Moye, and James George; his sister, Carolyn Chirillo Dover, DE ; his nieces, Deborah Seward, Dawn King, and Kristen Chirillo; his nephew, Christopher Chirillo ; and nine great-nieces and nephews Dover, DE. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Robbins Hose Company in Jack’s honor. Funeral services will be held February 28, 2026 at the Dover Fire Department 103 South Governors Ave. Visitation begins 10:00am, service at 11:00am burial following at Sharon Hills, Route 8 Dover. Reception following back at Fire Station. Funeral services are entrusted to Traders Funeral Home.
