James Jim Persinger's Obituary
James Frederick Persinger, 77
Dover – James “Jim” Frederick Persinger passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born in Lewisburg, West Virginia on March 17, 1940. He was a talented athlete who played basketball, baseball and football for the Smyrna High School Eagles, where he earned the nickname “Perk”. He then went on to Wesley College, where he again played basketball, baseball and football for the Wolverines. Jim continued his studies at the University of Connecticut, where he played football for the Huskies, was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, and where he met the love of his life, Jeanne. After graduating in 1967, Jim joined the Army Reserves and embarked on a series of ventures, which included serving as a music promoter and small business owner.
Jim had a larger than life personality. He took pleasure in the small moments and reveled in making those around him feel special. His infectious laughter and sense of humor coupled with his Jim-isms (catch phrases such as “We’re off like a herd of turtles” and “I’m taking my half out of the middle”) make him unforgettable.
His favorite pastimes were playing softball, attending antique auctions and anything having to do with classic cars. On many Sundays, Jim could be found enjoying the latest copy of his Hemmings Motor News with a cup of black coffee.
He was an incredibly dedicated father and his daughters were his pride and joy. They honor his memory and his legacy as they continue to emulate his love and his giant bear hugs with their own families.
Jim is survived by his wife and best friend of 50 years, Jeanne, his three daughters and their husbands, Jessica and Flavien Gascard of Wilmington, DE, Keely and Eric Niebrzydowski of Dover, DE, and Jocelyn and Brad Yurkovich of Okinawa, Japan. He also leaves seven grandchildren who adored their Pop-Pop. He is survived by his younger brother, Bill Persinger, and his wife, Sheryl, of Newport, DE.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Rhoda and Harvey Persinger, as well as his sister, Barbara.
In lieu of flowers, the family makes a heartfelt request that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org). Letters of condolences may be sent to www.traderfh.com
