Herndon Emerson Steilkie Jr.'s Obituary
Herndon Emerson Steilkie Jr., a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, at his home in Hartly, Delaware. Born on February 16, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland, Herndon was the embodiment of strength and craftsmanship throughout his life.
Growing up in Bozman, Maryland, he developed a deep appreciation for nature that would stay with him forever. After completing high school and feeling the call to serve his country, Herndon enlisted in the United States Air Force. His service instilled values of discipline and dedication that he carried into every aspect of his life.
Upon returning home from military service, Herndon's passion for building led him to become an excellent Master Carpenter. He took immense pride in his work; each project was not just a job but an opportunity to create something lasting and beautiful. His meticulous attention to detail earned him respect among peers and clients alike.
Later in life, Herndon retired from carpentry and joined the team at Enterprise Car Rental where he continued to share his warmth with customers and colleagues until he decided to fully join retirement. Even after stepping away from formal employment roles—he never truly retired from being a source of support for those around him.
Herndon's love for birdwatching became one of his greatest joys as he spent countless hours observing feathered friends flit through trees or soar across open skies. Nature provided solace for him—a place where he could reflect on life's wonders while enjoying peaceful moments outdoors.
He is survived by his devoted wife, of 56 years, Virginia Gail Steilkie; their son Charles Steilkie; and loving brother Bryan Steilkie Sr., who will carry forward cherished memories of laughter-filled family gatherings under sunny skies or cozy evenings sharing stories by the firelight.
As we remember Herndon Emerson Steilkie Jr., let us celebrate not only the man who built structures but also relationships grounded firmly upon love—the strong spirit whose legacy will continue through those fortunate enough to have known him well. May we honor this remarkable soul by embracing our own passions wholeheartedly while nurturing connections with others just as he did throughout all stages of life’s journey.
In lieu of sending flowers, The Family is requesting donations be made to Bay Health Cancer, 640 South State St. Dover, Delaware 19901.
