I always like Gertrude's sense of humor and she was always a pleasure to talk to. She had some funny stories to tell every time I got to talk with her.

I remember my cousin Gertie Ann from when my brother Harry and I, were taken to visit my Mom, her Aunt Emma to visit Cousin Ed Dahn's Mom, Elizabeth in Hartly, Delaware.
Gertie and Ed were inseparable playmates and were always good to us when we visited from the big city, Wilmington, De. As adults, Gertie and Ed came to visit us where we now live in Atlanta, GA. for the past 50 years. Our visits together were too few, but the distance kept us apart, as well as the business of taking care of our collective families and children. The last visit we had from Ed and Gertie, was wonderful. Ed talked about and showed us some of the antics he used in his sideline playing a Clown. Gertie was her usual upbeat, sunny person. They had dropped in on us in Atlanta on their way to another exciting trip. I regret the miles kept us apart so much. Ed, you wrote a very touching remembrance of Gert. Your deep love and devotion to her and all of our family members is greatly appreciated. Love, Andree D'Onofrio London, cousin.
Cousin Gert and I were the same age and except for her attending 1st Grade at St. Gertrude’s Catholic Religious Academy in Ridgley Md., we went to Hartly Elementary, grades 1 through 8, and Smyrna’s John Basset Moore high school together. Her mother Anna and my mother Elizabeth were sisters. We also attended Marydel’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Catechism classes taught by nuns from St. Gertrude. Her caring mother and step-father Johnny helped my struggling single parent mother, (with an 8th grade education), greatly, by providing us with vegetables from the garden, milk from their cow and chickens from their poultry raising business, to help feed our family which included my little brother, Richard. Uncle Johnny also hired me to work on their 14 acre farm during the summer, when I was a kid.
Aunt Anna paid for Gert and me to have Piano lessons for about a year to give us a little culture exposure. Gert, later in high school, took up clarinet lessons, and played in the high school band at football game half-time shows and school assemblies. We had drivers-education together and after we got our driver’s license, Uncle Johnny allowed us to use their old ’39 Chevy to attend school functions. (He also allowed me to use it for our family doctor and other business appointments). Prior to that, they took us to our appointments. Her mother, Anna and step-father Johnny, were great caring people and she, (and we), were lucky to have them.
Later in life she and husband Leroy, were able to join my wife Phyllis and I, on several vacation trips, memorable Hawaiian Islands and St Maarten as well as others. With her mother’s passing, Gert committed herself to be the soul care-giver to her step-father Johnny, who had dementia and required close attention. After several years, Uncle Johnny passed away and Gert buried his cremated ashes with Aunt Anna, (who was buried next to her sister, my mother). Not long after that she committed herself to be a care-giver to husband Leroy, also with dementia, for several years ‘til his passing. God Bless all Care-givers!
Her other accomplishments are in her self-created obituary, but hopefully these additional comments will help you to understand the type of person Gert was, and I hope the Good Lord will recognize her good accomplishments and reserve her a spot in heaven with life ever-lasting! May she rest in Peace!
Cousin Eddie! (Ed Dahn)
PS I was disappointed when you removed this memory previously!

Cousin Eddie!
I remember Gertrude from our time together collecting Agricultural data though our NASS/NASDA partnership. She was one of the sharpest, wittiest enumerators I remember working with. I sit today reminiscent of her smile and spunk. Many prayers and condolences to all who loved her!
I am sad to hear that Gertrude has passed away. I, too, knew Gertrude through the Kent Master Gardeners (MG). She was an extremely active MG when I began in 1995 and I thoroughly enjoyed volunteering with her over the years, especially working alongside one another in the DSU Greenhouse. She always had such spunk, energy, wit, and always a smile. She was the Kent MG Timekeeper for a very long time for Kent County, served on the Executive Board, Scholarship, Workshop, and many other committees. She took very good care of Leroy when he was ill; we enjoyed it when he was able to tag along . Her presence has been missed the past couple of years, and we will continue to miss her in the group. I thoroughly enjoyed volunteering with and getting to know Gertrude. She enriched my life in many ways over the years. I'll remember her grin the most. Rest in peace, my friend.
Hi. I just want to say how sorry i was to hear of Gertrudes passing. She was such a " character ". Ive only been a MG since 2011, but she was always willing to share her knowledge & funny quips about gardening & many other topics. I will miss her smile & laugh..My thoughts & prayers are with you all. Lois Seyler
Gertrude was a colleague of mine in the Kent County Master Gardeners. When she and I were on the boardshe helped show this newbe the ropes always with kindness and humor. I always enjoyed hearing about her family especially your fun times around the pool. She will be missed.
I remember you, Gert, with great fondness, we shared many "animal" stories, however, my favorite picture of you is, you riding a camel ! The Camel vision kept me from panic ,when you drove down the mountain in an on- comming snow storm with wild abandonment, I was new to our friend-ship then and not yet aware of your considerable abilities, cheers to you as you are on to your next adventures, no doubt with Leroy.
