Gary Harrison's Obituary
Gary Harrison of Dover, DE passed away on July 2, 2016 at Kent General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of 25 years of the late Elswyth; son of the late Samuel Harrison and Kitty Robinson of Dover; brother of the late Bruce.
Gary was born on December 7, 1937 in Manhattan, NY. He is a graduate of North Kingstown High School in Wickford, Rhode Island. While there, he achieved the honor of Eagle Scout. Gary enlisted in the US Air Force out of high school and there became interested in electrical engineering. Using the educational benefits of the GI Bill of Rights, he enrolled at Grantham University's School of Electronics in Washington D.C., and then at Richmond Polytechnic Institute to receive his Electrical Engineering degree. Gary's first job was at Scanlan Electronics but he soon moved on to Lockheed Martin International as a Navigational Aids Engineer involved with their Ministry of Defense & Aviation. His career took him all over the world, including Brazil, Chile, Panama, Nicaragua, Kenya, Zaire, Dubai, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.
Throughout his life, Gary was the consummate student, continually researching the Civil War,
Revolutionary War, World Wars and all religions. He did intensive research studies on movies, TV shows and books that he loved, including Batman, James Bond, Game of Thrones, and The Tudors. His passions included reading, history, Broadway musicals and his beloved Washington Redskins. After relocating to Dover, he worked at Dover Downs in various capacities, where he readily shared his charisma, sense of humor and silver tongue with anyone he came in contact with.
Gary is survived by his first wife, Bessie and their children Kelly Harrison (Shari), Laurie Siegart (Jeff), Niki Ganong (Jeffrey), Greg Harrison; his stepchildren William Wennington (Anne), Elizabeth Wennington, Nicholas Wennington, Margaret Middleton (Michael); grandchildren Robert Wennington, Taylor, Michael, Joshua, Maggie Middleton, Alex and Jaimie Harrison, Jeffrey and Maggie Siegart, Quentin and Ellie Harrison. He is also survived by a sister Sheila Garrett.
Friends may call Saturday, July 9 from 12-2 pm at Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St, Dover DE. Services will be held at 2 pm. Burial immediately following at Lakeside Cemetery, Dover DE.
