Elisabeth Maria Strissel's Obituary
Felton, DE - Elisabeth Maria Strissel, 81, died 2021, June 1, Tuesday, at home in Felton, DE
She was born Jan. 27, 1940 in Blumenthal, Germany, the daughter of Hermann Heisig and Hedwig Heisig.
She left her native homeland in Germany and arrived in the US in 1961, to begin a new life where she was proud to have become a US citizen. As mentioned in Mandy Baca's book, Discovering Vintage Miami, Elisabeth was one of the original owners and operated Mainzer's German Delicatessen, which opened in 1972, and had been a local Miami Favorite for many years. She transitioned away from the food industry into retail and enjoyed working at Senn's Five and Dime store for several years. Elisabeth found her final passion in the hotel industry where she worked at the Omni Colonade Hotel in downtown Miami. She was awarded Employee of the Year several times.
She always enjoyed a good laugh and looked forward to "fuzzy navels" at Happy Hour on Fridays with her friends. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren Tom and Natalie and made special memories with them frequenting the Parrot Jungle in Miami. She loved knitting, cooking, gardening, and dancing. She was a member of the German-American Club of St. Augustine, FL and member of the Lady's Red Hat Club.
Upon her retirement, she and her long-time companion, Gabe, enjoyed traveling extensively together. She moved from Miami to St. Augustine, FL where she lived 20 years before moving to Felton, DE to be with her daughter and son in law.
Elisabeth was preceded in death by her son Norbert Peter Strissel (2019). Survivors are her daughter Sylvia (Strissel) Judd and son in law, Jon K. Judd of Felton, DE, two grandchildren, Thomas Alexander Strissel of CA. and Natalie Jaclyn Strissel of Orlando, FL.
