Edward William Goate, 85
November 17, 1930- October 26, 2016
Edward William Goate passed away on October 26, 2016, at the Fairfax Nursing Center in Fairfax, VA, after a long illness.
He is survived by his daughter, Denise M. Goate, of Alexandria, VA.
Dr. Goate is also survived by three nephews, Francis Dachille of Chicago, IL, Thomas Dachille and his wife, Susan, of Long Island, NY and Robert Dachille of Long Island, NY, one niece, Diane Cote’ of AZ; four grand-nieces, Rebecca Dachille of Chicago, IL, Lauren Dachille of California, Devon Healy of Manhattan, NY, and Brynn Healy Maxwell of Long Island, NY; and three grand-nephews, Thomas Dachille, Stephen Dachille and Kevin Dachille, all of Long Island, NY.
Dr. Goate was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Clarke Goate; a sister, Joan Kiernan, of Manhattan, NY; a brother, Robert Goate, of Port Richey, FL; and a niece, Susan Healy of Manhattan, NY.
Dr. Goate was a graduate of St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY, where he studied History and Political Science. He earned an MA degree in Economics and History from Hunter College, and an MBA from New York University in Management and Marketing. He later earned a Doctorate of Education from NOVA University, in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
Dr. Goate served in the United States Army during the Korean War, from 1952-1954. He worked in Sales and Marketing at NCR before he made a career change and entered the field of education, teaching History and Economics in the New York City Public School System. While at Fort Hamilton High School, in Brooklyn, NY, he also served as Dean of Students and as Assistant Principal. Dr. Goate then moved on to the Hastings on the Hudson School District, NY, where he worked as a high school principal, and as a Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
In 1971, Dr. Goate and his family moved to Dover, Delaware and the Capital School District, where he worked as Director of Secondary Curriculum, Assistant Superintendent and finally, Superintendent of Schools, until his retirement in 1992.
Dr. Goate had a passion for volunteerism. After his retirement, he was proud to serve his community as an officer or member of over 20 state and local organizations. He loved the time he spent working with and helping others, especially with those organizations where he could contribute to improving the lives of young people.
His family wishes to thank the staff at Heritage at Dover Assisted Living for their friendship and support, the Fairfax Nursing Center for their outstanding care, and the Capital Care Hospice staff and volunteers for their extraordinary compassion and care.
Visitation will be on November 9, 2016, from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Trader Funeral Home in Dover, Delaware.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Dover, DE, at 10am on November 10, 2016.
Interment will be at the Delaware Veteran’s Cemetery, Bear, DE at 1pm on November 10, 2016.
