David L. Ford's Obituary
David Leslie Ford, born on December 24, 1933, in Cheektowaga, New York, to Leslie and Jean Elizabeth Ford, passed away on December 16, 2023, at his nursing home in Wilmington, Delaware. He was 89 years old. David is survived by his younger brother, Daniel Keith Ford, of Peoria, Arizona; his daughter, Yvette Jean Yerkes, of Milford, Delaware; his grandchildren, Ellie and Matthew Yerkes; and his beloved canine companions, Sammy and Barney.
In his youth, David assumed the role of protector for his younger brother, Dan, demonstrating a sense of care that remained a cornerstone of his character. Later on, he married Charlotte Thompson from Little Creek, DE, and found profound joy in raising their daughter, who held a special place in his heart.
David served honorably in the United States Army as a Fireman and later as a Weapons Communications Systems Technician for the 98th Fighter Interceptor Squadron in the United States Air Force. After his military service, he dedicated 36 years to a successful career as a salesman for Dover Electric. Upon retiring in 1999, David passionately volunteered for the Modern Maturity Center's Meals on Wheels program. He adopted and cared for more than 20 dogs who were in need of homes, many of whom were found while making his Meals on Wheels deliveries.
David's commitment extended beyond his community service. He actively participated in the First Baptist Church and New Harvest Baptist Church of Dover, where he found spiritual fulfillment. While David had a strong sense of duty, he also had passions that brought him immense joy. He had a love for speed, photography, and karate. He fearlessly navigated old logging roads in Spokane on his 650 Triumph and Ariel Square Four. In the 1970s, he discovered photography, initially capturing lighthouses and eventually becoming a talented wedding photographer, preserving countless joyous occasions.
David's life was a testament in his service to both humans and animals alike, a legacy of genuine compassion. As per David's wishes, there will be no memorial service. Those who wish to honor his memory are encouraged to make a donation to Grass Roots Rescue at www.grrde.org/donate. This organization will be responsible for the care of his three dogs and many others who would be forgotten without their compassion.
