Charles H Stewart's Obituary
Dover - Charles Herbst Stewart of Dover, Delaware, left this earthly life of 85 years for his heavenly home on March 24, 2016. He was considered a Dover native since he was four months old when his parents moved their family to Dover from Philadelphia.
He graduated form Dover High School where he was active in clubs and was on the football and track teams. He held their track record for the 100 yard dash for nearly 20 years. In 1946 he was pictured on the cover of Redbook magazine, profiled as the fires student to complete Delaware's innovative Driver's Education course.
He was a graduate of Bucknell University. While a student there he participated in clubs and was the manager of the Men's Basketball team.
The day after his college graduation he began working at International Playtex in Dover, where he was dedicated office manager for 36 years.
A life - long member of First Baptist Church of Dover, he served on many committees, boards and as moderator of the church. In 1990, he was elected by the congregation as Church Historian for life. He was the editor of the monthly church newsletter for almost 40 years until Alzheimer's robbed him of this ability.
Charlie was a member of the Central Delaware Camp of the Gideons International. He had served as their camp secretary.
A baseball fan, he attended professional games in 9 major league parks and games in 7 minor league parks. After his retirement, he enjoyed watching Spring Training games in Florida. However, his favorite teams were the Philadelphia Phillies and the Wilmington Blue Rocks, and the attended may of their baseball games.
He and his wife enjoyed traveling. He visited 46 state, including Alaska, as well as traveling to Canada and Mexico. Their favorite retreat on multiple occasions was to Canaan Valley, West Virginia.
He loved his family. He supported and encourage his children and grandchildren in their various church, school, and sports activities.
He was preceded in Death by his parents, J. Graham and Natalie Stewart and a sister, Nancy S. Ellis.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years Mary (Deardorff) Stewart; children: Flossie (Henry) Ford of Dover, Douglas (Susan) Stewart of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren: Abby Ford, Joy Ford, Allison Stewart, Graham Stewart; brother in law David Ellis as well as nephews and nieces and their families.
A memorial services will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 301 Walker Road, Dover. Friends will be received by the family form 12 noon to 1 p.m. prior to the service at First Baptist. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contribution in his memory may be made to the The Gideons International, Central Delaware Camp, P.O.
