Carl J "CJ" Holloway III's Obituary
Carl J. Holloway III
“CJ”
CJ Holloway died August 11, 2018, in the presence of family. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware on May 5, 1946, and grew up in Dover. He lived for a time in Rehoboth, and in his early years, spent many happy days hunting and fishing. In his youth he was an avid swimmer, and he told stories of swimming in Andrews Lake, and in the ocean from Rehoboth to Cape Henlopen. He was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy, and he remained in touch with friends he made there. He attended college at the University of Florida, where he was a forestry major. Throughout his life he remained interested in all things connected to nature, and he contributed to charities supporting animals and the earth.
CJ had several careers during his work life. For a time, he worked in law enforcement. He spent five years in the employ of the Getty Oil Company, working in the engine room of an oil tanker and traveling the world. He retired from Philip Morris, USA, after twenty years as a manufacturer’s representative, and his schooling and work provided him with enough adventure to last more than a lifetime. He delighted in sharing stories of his travels and of the people he met along the way.
A born salesman, he never met a stranger, or heard a joke he wouldn’t tell-sometimes to the chagrin of his family. He got great enjoyment interacting with the “Mom-and-Pop” grocers in his sales territory, which encompassed the area from Delaware to Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. and Virginia, and all parts in between. He was proud of his professionalism, and he did his work with integrity and dedication.
A voracious reader, he enjoyed spending time with a good book. He loved music of all kinds, and good food, and some of his happiest moments were those spent sharing a meal with family and friends. He had wide-ranging interests and took courses in fields as diverse as computer programming and welding. To the end of his days, he was interested in the world around him. Unfailingly generous, he was an honorable and decent man, and he will be missed by his family and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Audrey Boyd Holloway, and by many of his closest canine companions. He is no doubt spending eternal time with Ursa, Angie, and Lucky, who had a special place in his heart. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pamela, his daughter and son-in-law Katie and Frank Ryman, and son, Matt Holloway. Also surviving him are his sister, Carol Holloway and sister-in-law, Sheila Landis, as well as his two grandchildren, Logan Holloway and Anira Ryman, who were the joy of his life.
The family wishes to thank those who took care of him in the last month of his life, particularly Drs. Sundaram and Naini, Nurse Practitioner Andrea Walker, and the nurses he called his “Angels of 2-West.” Services will be private, and the family asks that those who wish to do so make a contribution to the charity of your choice.
