Barbara Sue Layton's Obituary
Barbara Sue Layton was called home to the Lord on Sunday, October 27th. She passed away peacefully with her loved ones by her side.
Born Barbara Sue Lindsay on April 21, 1951, in Hagerstown, Maryland to the late Clarence Walter Lindsay Jr. and the late Marjorie Jean Williams, she was the middle child. She was preceded in death by her older brother Bob and her younger brother Steve.
Barbara was a stay-at-home mother of three until the mid-eighties when she and her late husband Robert Gilmore Duckworth took ownership of and operated the Bridgetown Store in Bridgetown, Maryland. Word on the street was that customers would come from miles away to buy her famous cheesesteak subs. Barbara was always giving back to her community making sure that everyone had food and other necessities, especially if a snowstorm shut everything else down.
In the late 90’s she moved to Tuckahoe and became the manager of the CVS in Easton, Maryland. In 2010, she moved to Dover, Delaware and became the HR manager for Sears. She loved people as much as working and once she retired, she held several part time gigs just to be out and about.
Barbara loved cardinals and Harpers Ferry, WV. The first week of October turned into a mini vacation with her two daughters and her granddaughter. They would visit Nannies grave, Barbara’s mother and take time to see various other relatives who live around the area. They would visit Harper’s Ferry just in time for the leaves to change. This became a family tradition until her health no longer permitted her to do so.
Barbara was a very devoted loving mother and grandmother and genuine friend and inspiration to those who were fortunate enough to cross her path. She was not afraid to speak her mind and if she didn’t like something she would definitely tell you. She also had a big heart and would give the shirt off her back if you needed it. She was a regular donor of Feeding America as well as St. Jude’s Hospital for Children.
Barbara’s radiant spirit is carried on by her three children, her grandchildren and her grandog Rufus, who were her entire world. Her son John Christopher Duckworth and his wife Tamara of Pine Island, Florida. Her daughter Marjanna Duckworth and her fur baby Rufus of Dover, Delaware. Her daughter Gretchen Adrienne Everett and husband Chad of Harrington, Delaware. Her oldest grandson Matthew Duckworth preceded her in death. Her granddaughter Lindsay Duckworth and her youngest grandson Tanner Everett. Her sister and best friend Debbie Lindsay of Federalsburg, Maryland as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Services for Barbara will be held on Friday November 29th from 1-3 at Trader Funeral Home.
