John Lyman Sipple Sr.

Dover, On August 26th, 2021, John Lyman Sipple, Sr. peacefully passed away at the age of 87 in his home surrounded by his children, after a long battle with cancer. He was known as Lyman to his wife, friends and family and John to co-workers. He was married for 65 years to the love of his life and soulmate, Grace Hurd Sipple who passed away in August of last year. Lyman was the beloved father of Terry Singley and husband Scott, John “Jack” Sipple, Jr. and wife Terry, and his youngest son Michael Sipple, who predeceased him. He was a loving and devoted grandfather to Matthew Schur who predeceased him in March, his wife Melanie, and their children Ryan, Samantha and Gregg. He has three deceased siblings, Charles Lee Sipple, Jr., Charlotte Mildred Micklos, and Shirley Sipple Micklos. Lyman was employed for 35 years by DelDOT in various positions: District Engineer- Kent County, Statewide Chief of Maintenance, Statewide Chief of Materials & Research, Statewide Chief of Planning, and Assistant Director- Office of Planning (OPEM). His last job was Project Engineer at the New Castle Conservation District. He also proudly served in the Military Army reserves as 1st Lieutenant & Captain from 1959 to 1969, and then transferred to the U.S. Air Force Reserves - Civil Engineering Squadron where he served from 1969-1990, as a Major and Lieutenant Colonel. His education included a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Delaware, U.S. Army Command & General Staff College and the U.S. Air Force War College. Lyman cherished spending as much time as possible at his Pennsylvania mountain cabin that family and friends built together over many years. He enjoyed traveling and dining out with Grace. Lyman loved the Lord and was a Christian. A memorial service is being held on Sat. Sept. 25, 2021 10 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 113 Lotus Street, Dover Delaware 19901 with arrangements from Trader Funeral Home of Dover, Delaware.
