Edward C Lewis

September 17, 1939 - January 22, 2018

Edward C. Lewis of Hartly, Delaware passed away January 22, 2018 surrounded by family. He was born September 17, 1939 to the late Warren J. and Edna A. Lewis. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Linda Hildebrandt; and his eldest daughter, Denise Marie Lucas. Ed leaves behind a wife of 41 years, Linda; 2 daughters, Kimberley Dean (her husband, Dale) and Donna Dixon (her husband, Brian); 5 grandchildren, Christopher Lucas (his wife, Melissa), Brian Lucas (his wife, Alyssa), Travis Dixon (his fiancé, Autumn), Brooke Dean, and Bailey Dean; 4 great-grandchildren, Emily, Addison, Justin, and Colton; a sister, Edna (Lewis) Vanderhoof; and 4 nieces. Edward served his country by joining the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic in September, 1957. He served in the Vietnam War. He completed his service after 20 years. He also worked as a 911 dispatcher for Kent County, Delaware. Mr. Lewis served his community by joining the Hartly Volunteer Fire Company (HVFC) in 1972. He has served in local, county, and state levels during his volunteer service. However, his real love has been EMS (emergency medical service). He served as ambulance captain for a total of 27 combined years. Through his leadership, the ambulance was able to participate in Nascar & Monster Racing events at Dover Downs. Mr. Lewis was elected president of the Delaware State Ambulance Association in 1988 & 1989. He served as president of the Kent County Ambulance Association in 1996 & 1997 and secretary in 1998. On September 11, 2001 Ed lead a train of 40+ ambulances from Delaware to New York City to provide any assistance needed following the horrendous terror attack. He was elected by the State Ambulance Association for EMT of the Year in 2001. In 2002, Ed was elected into DVFA (Delaware Volunteer Fireman’s Association) Hall of Fame. He was given the honor of Kent County Fireman of the Year in 2012 and he was awarded Ambulance Captain Emeritus from Hartly Fire Company. Ed was an avid hunter and enjoyed teaching his grandsons how to hunt and fish. All services will be held at Hartly Volunteer Fire Company. Viewing will be held Friday, January, 26, 2018 from 6-8 pm. Service will be held Saturday, January, 27, 2018 at noon, with a viewing prior starting at 11am. Interment will follow at Sharon Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Hartly Ambulance. Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, so loved, so missed, so very dear.
