Gladys Hutchins

A native Delawarean Gladys Hutchins 94, died peacefully on Sunday May 11, 2025, at Dover’s Westminster Village. She was born on October 27, 1930, to James and Minnie Rash in Lebanon, Delaware. Mrs. Hutchins attended elementary school in Magnolia and went on to Caesar Rodney High School where she lettered in basketball for Caesar Rodney High and at one of the games met the love of her life on a blind date, her husband Gilbert Hutchins. Following graduation from high school in 1948, Mrs. Hutchins worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as a secretary to the office manager and Diamond State Telephone Company in Dover. She married Gilbert Hutchins on May 29, 1949, at the Magnolia Methodist Church. On May 29, 2024, Gilbert & Gladys celebrated 75 years of a wonderful marriage with family and friends at Westminster. Following the birth of their first child, Mrs. Hutchins became a homemaker and mother. Mrs. Hutchins was a loving wife and mother, a devoted Christian and a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Dover, a Cub Scout Den Mother and during many summers she held Bible School in her backyard for young children. She liked to cook and sew, take camping trips in the summers, and spend winters in Florida in their “Home on Wheels”. Mrs. Hutchins was preceded in death by her parents James and Minnie Rash, husband Gilbert Hutchins and brother Russell Rash. She is survived by her sister-in-law Monika Rash, son Roger Hutchins, daughters Karen Chabot and husband Gregory of Felton and Susan Morris and husband Dr. Russell Morris of Pasadena, Texas. In addition, she is survived by 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild as well as many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at First Baptist Church, Dover on Thursday May 29 at 11:00am. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The retired Reverend Dan Taylor will officiate the service. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery, Dover immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a memorial contribution to First Baptist Church, 301 Walker Road, Dover, DE 19904.
